This year, we’ve decided not to take part in Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, or Cyber Monday.
It can be scary to go off of the beaten path, especially when we still have bills to pay! This weekend is also traditionally a successful sale for us that helps us afford taking a much needed break in December.
However, it has become clear to my husband and I that as a small business, we have the ability to set our own pace and choose actions that align with our values. We want to protect time with our family instead of being swallowed up by stress and pressure. We don't want to contribute to the FOMO and overspending these sales promote. We are also aware of the call for an economic blackout this holiday weekend, and we do not want to put our customers in a position where they feel they have to choose between standing in solidarity, or saving money during an already tough economic season.
And honestly, running a small, two-person operation means rest isn’t optional; it’s essential. This time of year we are often working 7 days a week to keep up. Trying to fit everything in is hard enough without tacking on a big sale right before our break.
But don’t worry; we are still open for regular sales through December 9th, and when we come back in January, we will have a sale to welcome you back.
